FAQs on Implementing

Q.  What are my options for implementing?
A.
1SYNC customers can implement data synchronization through the 1SYNC Onboard Support program or with a Solution Partner certified by 1SYNC.

Q.  What is a GTIN and who is the owner?
A.  A Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) is the globally unique GS1 System identification number for products and services. A Global Trade Item Number may be 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits in length using the EAN/UCC-8, UCC-12, EAN/UCC-13, or EAN/UCC-14 Data Structure respectively. A company or product that is GTIN-compliant is able to process, store, and communicate with trading partners using all Global Trade Item Numbers, whether 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits. The owner of the GTIN is the owner of the GS1 Company Prefix, the number assigned to the organization by GS1.

Q.  What classification scheme does 1SYNC use?
A.
1SYNC uses the Global Product Classification code (GPC). GPC is the classification code that is used within the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN). 1SYNC also supports the UDEX classification system and will for the foreseeable future.

Q.  What is the definition of optional and mandatory attributes in 1SYNC?
A.
Optional, in the XML context, means that particular attribute does not have to be populated. Mandatory means that the attribute must be populated. There are some attributes that are conditional, i.e. they are only mandatory if other data is present. An example of conditional attribute is if you specify item weight, then you must also specify the weight units, e.g. pounds.

Q.  Why should I fill in an optional field?
A.  It is recommended that all relevant optional fields be populated in the event another trading partner requires the information in the missing field. Providing as much optional data as possible increases the probability that a recipient will accept the published data rather than reject it.

Q.  Will I need to change my internal classification codes?
A.  No, it is suggested that trading partners build a cross reference to the GPC classification codes as part of the interoperability and data synchronization process.

Q.  Can an item be in more than one category?
A.  No. At this time, an item may contain only one classification code category when registered in the 1SYNC Data Pool and synchronized with data recipients utilizing GS1 standard notification messaging.
